Question

We are having some great discussion about the role of common
assessments in a standards based grading system. Some feel common
assessments can restrict personalized education while others feel
they are necessary for a consistent measuring stick across the
district. Any thoughts on the best use or non-use of common
assessments?

I think there is a limited place for common assessments mainly as a way for teachers to
improve their consistency with designing and scoring assessments. The data should also be
analyzed to identify adjustments that are necessary in the teaching/learning strategies
employed to help students perform at higher levels.
