Ken
we have teachers who are giving students unit tests and then not wanting to let the students have them. they do go over the tests but students are not allowed to take, copy, have the test. is this good assessment practice?

Generally it is not good practice although I would see it as being acceptable occasionally if
there is a good reason for the test to be kept secure. Please note the two conditions -
occasionally and good reason to be secure.
