Question

What is your philosophy on having final exams? Most of our teachers
weigh them 20 percent of the final grade. I as the principal want to
get rid of finals and use the time for more learning.

says:

I believe all high school courses should have a culminating assessment that provides
students with the opportunity to demonstrate that they have mastered the enduring
understandings of the course. The culminating ass't should be one or more of a
performance ass't, an exam or an oral. It should no count for a specific proportion of the
final grade but should have a significant impact on the final grade. For example, if a
student has not done particularly well but aces the culminating assessment their final
grade should be what they received on the culminating ass't.
