Question

Hi, I am a new teacher and have questions about my grading system. I
use a total points system rather than a weighted system. I was
wondering if you reccommend that all tests be worth 100 points to
easily show their percentage grade. For example in order to allow
students adequate time to complete a test i had to shorten the number
of questions resulting in the test only being worth 86 points. Is this
ok or in the future should all tests be made of at least 100 points?

I recommend that you absolutely do not use points and percentages; you should use levels
of performance. If you use a points based assessment you need to determine the cut
scores for each level - on a difficult assessment on difficult concepts or skills the cut score
for each level should be relatively low, on an easier assessment on easier concepts or skills
the cut score for each level should be relatively high.
