Question

Hi Ken,

If a district was trying to implement a uniform grading policy would you recommend total
points or category weights? If using category weights we did discuss using minimum
ranges in each category so that one category doesn't weight more than we actually
want it to. Example tests 40% and you give 2, meaning they are really each worth 20%
of the final grade versus quizzes worth 30% and only giving one.

I would recommend very strongly against weighting by assessment method as you
describe. Grades should be based on standards not assessment methods. With a standards
base I recommend against weighting (unless it is very obvious that some standards are
more significant than others) because grading isn't or shouldn't be simply a mechanical,
numerical exercise.
