Question

My school has several brave teachers who have started using standards
based grading in their practice. This effort has been supported by the
admin.and the parents and students have embraced our new grading
practice. We use a 4 point scale which includes the terms not yet
meeting, minimally meeting, fully meeting, and exceeding expectations.
The issue that we face is that students in Honours expect to receive a
5% bump on their final grade. Some of us feel strongly that this
arbitrary bump does not fit with our new assessment practices and we
are wondering what your thoughts are. (We have had a few acrimonious
meetings hashing out this issue that are counterproductive and
demoralising).
Thanks,
Sarah

says:

There should never be a 'bump' in a grade. The report card/transcript should indicate an
accurate grade for an honors course (clearly identified as such). The issue of whether there
should be weighted gpa's is a different issue on which I see no clear answer.
