Question

Ken,
I work in Winchester Public Schools in Virginia and you visited us
several years ago. We are still implementing grading changes but have
had a recent change in school board members. We would like to move to
a 4 pt scale next year. I am anticipating the school board asking how
many other schools use a 4 pt scale. Could you point me in a
direction to get the answer to this anticipated question? Thank You
Jerry Putt

Jerry,
My experience suggests that a 4 level scale is what is used most commonly at the
elementary level across North America, and that it's use is increasing at the middle school
level and is still very rare at the high school level. At the high school level I think it is worth
pointing out to your school board that AP (5) and IB (7) both use levels not % or letter
grades. I am not a researcher so cannot give you specifics; I think you would need to
consult someone like Tom Guskey to get that.
