Question

Mr. O'Connor,

I see the benefits of grading for learning, but what formal studies have taken place to substantiate its relevance? Does grading for learning increase student achievement, or does it simply lead to a more accurate depiction/report of student achievement? Are there any studies taking place right now?

Jason I am not a researcher so cannot give you a complete answer. I am not aware of
formal studies that show grading for learning increases student achievement but I have
heard lots of anecdotal evidence. One important piece is that many formal studies show
that using formative assessment as assessment for learning, i.e. not including
practice/learning activities, significantly improves achievement.
