Question

What is the value of final exams at the high school level worth 20 percent of the final
grade? We are seeing that the final exam grades are significantly lower than the term
grades. Thank you. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I believe all high school courses should have a final evaluation that provides opportunities
for students to show that they have learned in depth and can bring together their
understanding of the different parts of the course. Those final evaluations should have a
significant impact on the determination of the grade although it should not be a fixed
percentage. Also students should be well prepared for the final evaluation having had
opportunities to practice and get feedback on the type of questions or tasks that make up
the final evaluation. If final exam grades are lower than term grades I think it means that
students have not learned in depth and/or they have not prepared or been well prepared
for the final exam.
