Question

Why would a teacher use an 85 as a max on an
exam unstead of 100. The test is made up of fill
ins/matching/short answer etc. all valued
differently

Because that is what the points added up to. I used to give tests that were out of 73 or 27 or
64. Regardless of the total number of points what is important - and should be identified by
your teacher - are the cut scores for Excels, Proficient and so on.
